Mariluci Byrnes, DDS
DIRECTOR OF DENTISTRY
I was born and raised in Brazil in a wonderful family with both my parents, a younger brother and sister, I started Dental school when I was 18 years old, attending "Santo Amaro School of Dentistry" in São Paulo, known today as UNISA .
I graduated when I was 22 and right after graduation I started working part time for a group of pediatric dentists providing dental care in mobile units to children in need in remote areas of Sao Paulo, Brazil. I was also accepted for a part time intern position at the Dental School in the Orthodontic department where I stayed for 3 years and had the opportunity to learn orthodontics from some of the best orthodontists in Brazil.
Although I liked orthodontics, I found my true calling while working on the mobile units, when I had an opportunity to provide dental care at several orphanages in my hometown. I felt that I was caring for the ones that needed the most, the ones that had no chance of care if it wasn't for that group of pediatric dentists that brought the dentist to them.
Even though going to the dentist is not always a pleasant situation, the kids I treated were thankful and extremely appreciative of my attention to their needs. Treating them made me happy and fulfilled and made them happy as well, for having someone that cared.
When I turned 29, I felt that I needed a change of environment, that I needed to travel and explore the world, and that was when I landed in San Diego, following my best friend and travel partner and I never looked back.
Here I met my husband and built a family and after I had my second child I decided that it was time to go back to dentistry, and once again do what I knew best.
I started working at SDCDHC as a general dentist in 2009 where once again I found a place where I could use my skills to help improve the oral health of the underprivileged children of San Diego.
As the new Clinical Director my goal is to continue improving the oral health of the most vulnerable children in San Diego by providing quality dental care and by educating patients and parents, giving them the tools they need to have a healthy mouth.
When I'm not at work you can find me with my husband and kids, I try to spend as much time with them as I can, I love to watch my teens grow and I'm proud of the person they are becoming. The best part of my day is taking a walk to the beach with my husband where we talk about our days and just enjoy each other's company. I also enjoy spending time with my mom, going on hikes, stand-up paddle boarding, laying at the beach with a good book and sharing a good glass of wine with a friend.
I'm looking forward to many more years at SDCDHC!

BOARD MEMBER
I’m a fanatic about snow skiing and my dream has always been to ski with my children one day in remote areas. In San Diego I like taking my two boys to the beach and just watching them play and get dirty. They are 6 and 3 and keep me on my toes (and up early in the mornings). My wife keeps me sane and growing. I’m excited about the future in general. I hope to make an impact at any level, helping others reach their fullest potential. I love the CDHA project as a new Board member because health access unblocks the potential for achievement. Those with the least access have the the most dramatic and meaningful life changes.
Charles Drury, DDS
BOARD MEMBER
Dr. Drury has unique background, having practiced as a dentist for over 20 years coupled with non-clinical experience and active leadership roles. He had an extremely rewarding career with personal, financial, and professional achievements but decided to pursue a passion outside of clinical dentistry to achieve a broader impact within the healthcare industry.
Dr. Drury did his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Riverside with a B.S. in Psychobiology (Neuroscience). He completed an Emt-1 certification at UCLA. After earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, he completed the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Postdoctoral Program, an intensive clinical and academically rigorous full-time 12-month certificate program designed to prepare graduates to deliver comprehensive patient-centric care for all patients. As a passionate life-long learner I later became a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) which required over 500 credit hours; only about 6 percent of general dentists in the U.S. and Canada are AGD Fellows. As a presenter, he has delivered well-received lectures to a range of audiences with a variety of expertise, from the American Academy of General Dentistry to the Women's Health Organization. Currently, Dr. Drury serves in an advisory capacity to a number of boards, including Promethean Dental Systems; Revere Partners; Profit4Dentists.com, the University of Stetson (leadership and innovation); and Recordlinc where he has also designed and created software, as well as performed competitive market analytics. A former research technician at the Oral Microbiology laboratory of the University of Southern California, he has also been recognized with awards from the U.S. Senate; U.S. House of Representatives; the California Legislative Assembly; and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Drury is an international allied thought leader for www.teethcloud.org
He enjoys working and collaborating with other like-minded thought leaders nationally and internationally to help improve the lives of others and have a positive impact in the world.
